National Theatre Standards

TAEA National Theatre Standards Project

Current theatre arts outcomes across Canada are determined provincially, leaving some regions without any documents to support theatre arts teaching. There is a need and desire for unified language around theatre content, expectations, and priorities across the national educational theatre community. Creating this language will provide for more equitable access to theatre education, thus preparing students, not just for careers in the arts, but for creative problem-solving, public speaking, and general confidence in their own self-expression. A national set of theatre standards will provide Canadian theatre educators with:

  • An advocacy initiative to shift the focus to the value of theatre at a national level
  • A way to isolate theatre as its own art form (not to be lumped with “the arts”)
  • A conversation to unite theatre educators across the country
