Trickster Theatre: From Classroom to Stage — The Art of Collaborative Storytelling

Alex Allen

What happens when professional theatre artists step into your school and, in just one week, help students create an original performance from the ground up?

In this interactive session, discover the Trickster Theatre residency process and how we turn a school-wide theme into a dynamic, student-driven theatrical experience. We’ll explore how artists collaborate with teachers and students to develop stories, movement, characters, and visual elements—and how simple ideas can grow into compelling pieces for the stage.

Learn how a typical Trickster residency unfolds, from introducing the theme and generating ideas to rehearsing, refining, and bringing hundreds of students together for a final performance. We’ll also look at Trickster’s approach to physical theatre and storytelling, where movement, imagination, collaboration, and student voice are at the heart of the process.

Come see how theatre can become a powerful way for students to explore ideas, tell stories, and create something together.

Tina Kenny

One Binder, One Movement: Why STAR Fest Belongs in Your Classroom

Tina Kenny

Every drama teacher holds on to those special memories and moments: a student finding their voice; when the show comes together at the last moment; when a student starts to believe theatre could actually be their future and not just a class they enjoy.
This 75-minute session is about giving your students more of those moments, and the pathways to back them up.
Tina will walk through what a STAR Troupe actually does for a program, how STAR Fest gives students real feedback from working theatre professionals and a shot at national scholarships, and what's available to you today: guides, handbooks, and a network of teachers who've already built this. You'll leave with concrete next steps for bringing that same opportunity home to your own students.

Presenter bio

Tina Kenny is TAEA's Alberta Chapter Director. She helps educators and schools connect with provincial professional development, regional STAR Festivals and national theatre education opportunities.

Qualities of Colour in Stage Lighting (Christie Lites)

Jess McNabb

A session on the nature of light and colour - what is it, how do we perceive it, and the effect lighting can have on the colour appearance of objects in our environments. We'll discuss the qualities of white light, and how the content of that light can vary depending on its source. Using some practical demonstrations, we'll discuss colour rendering and see how the content of a light source can affect how colours appear. If time permits, we will take a closer look at the colour tools available in ETC Eos lighting consoles, and how to use them to dial in the colour we want and how we get there. This session is intended for people who are interested in exploring the complex interactions of light and pigment- set and costume designers, lighting designers and technicians, make-up artists, and artists and designers of all sorts.
